By Dr. James Bevere, Superintendent of Schools, Pennsauken School District
Earlier in September, I had the privilege of meeting with our incredible district staff at the annual Convocation to share my vision for the 2025–2026 school year. It was a powerful moment; one filled with optimism, honesty, and a collective commitment to the future of Pennsauken Public Schools.
Now, I want to share that same message directly with you: our families, our community members, and most importantly, our students.
This school year is not just the beginning of another academic calendar; it is the beginning of a new chapter for our district. With new leadership comes a clean slate and a real opportunity to restart, renew, and reimagine how we serve our students. Together, we are turning the page. It is a new day in Pennsauken.
We are grounding our work in what I call the Three Ps of Pennsauken: Process, Progress, and Proficiency.
Process
Process is how we do our work, how we function as a unified school system, not a collection of individual schools. When each school operates on its own island, students suffer. This year, we are committed to aligning curriculum, evaluating programs for impact, and ensuring consistency across classrooms. That consistency builds trust and gives our students the stability they deserve.
Progress
Progress is about intentional and measurable growth. It is about getting a little better each day. As Coach John Wooden once said, “When you improve a little each day, eventually big things occur.” We must not be discouraged by slow change. True progress requires reflection, adjustment, and persistence. It takes time, but it lasts.
Proficiency
Proficiency is our non-negotiable. Our students deserve to leave every grade level fully prepared for what comes next whether it is the next classroom, the next challenge, or the next chapter in life. They are capable. In addition, it is our responsibility to guide them there.

Let me share a vision with you, one inspired by rowing. I think for too long, it felt like you have all been paddling hard, but sometimes in different directions. The result? You have gone in circles. However, every successful crew team has a coxswain, the leader who sets the course, keeps rhythm and ensures everyone rows in sync.
With new leadership and renewed focus, we now have that coxswain. It is time for Pennsauken to row together with purpose, power, and precision.
But we must also face a difficult truth: our foundation hasn’t been as strong as it needs to be. For years, you have worked tirelessly, but often on uneven ground. It has felt like trying to build on sand. But sand can’t hold the weight of the dreams we have for our children. We need to rebuild, not just repair. We need to lay a foundation of rock.
That is why our elementary schools will be a major focus this year. The foundation of learning starts there. If our youngest learners receive strong, consistent instruction and support, our middle and high schools will be set up for long-term success. This is how we ensure that each student is positioned to achieve step by step, year by year.
We are not here just to maintain. We are here to transform. Our students are watching us. They will feel the difference in our energy, our vision, and our commitment.
The poet Maya Angelou once said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Well, in Pennsauken, we know better and this year, we will do better. Let us remember: no team wins a race if the rowers are out of sync or if the boat is leaking. This year, with a clear direction and an intentional focus on the basics, we will row forward together. We will not drift. We will not spin. We will move forward united and determined.
Let us embrace the process, celebrate our progress, and commit to achieving proficiency for every single student. Let us build the strong foundation our children deserve because they deserve nothing less.
It is a new day in Pennsauken. Let us build it together.
