Michele Foster Lucas Shares Artistic Talents

Work of Michele Foster Lucas

By Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor

For over 30 years, Michele Foster Lucas has been expressing herself on canvas. The longtime Pennsauken resident’s work has spanned several genres: folk, abstract, figure, and the like. But in truth, her pursuits are a journey into herself, where the rest of the world disappears, and she finds contentment.

“Art is my place to hide, for lack of a better word,” explains Foster Lucas. “It’s part of exploration. It doesn’t always show through what I want to do, but it makes me feel good. It’s like a good cup of coffee. Just the thought of making art excites me.”

Michele, who is self-taught and prays over her work and clients, giving glory to God, enjoys using mixed media in her work. Oils, acrylics, pastels, and ink are used separately or mixed up together. She also incorporates botanicals, sand, and even found objects.

“I use a little bit of everything.”

Her work has been displayed in the Remee Art Gallery and Gallerie 500 in Washington D.C. and Michele was a featured artist at the Essence of African Fashion Show and the October Gallery in Philadelphia. Foster Lucas currently has an exhibit at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia which runs through May 28.

“After all these years, I’ve gotten to the point where I’m a ‘regular artist,’ and people respect my work. It feels good,” says Michele. “It’s just my hope that what I do makes people happy.”
