Franklin Elementary Celebrates All Star Readers

Franklin Elementary School took time to celebrate its All Star Readers during a special end-of-year assembly. Students were encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes a day for a whole week. The top two readers from each class had an opportunity to walk the “red carpet” and receive a special certificate, reading medal, book, and book mark. Every student celebrated the joy of reading and promised to keep reading over the summer. Congratulations to Franklin’s All Stars!

Carson Students Blast Off With Space Day

Carson’s annual Space Day was a blast! Fourth grade “scientists” worked collaboratively on the Mars Egg Drop problem solving task; first and second graders created and launched rockets; and students of all grade levels enjoyed their awesome experience visiting the Star Lab. A special thank you to Mrs. Tryon for all her planning and her efforts to make Space Day a success!

Wearing The Important Hat Of Policy Maker

BoardBitsSliderAs Board of Education members, we wear many different “hats.” We are accountants during budget times; educators when making important decisions regarding curriculum and instruction; and human resource experts when approving the hiring of new personnel. Thankfully, the Board of Education has the school administration, faculty and staff who inform, support, and guide us as we are taking on each of these different roles. This enables the Board to make knowledgeable decisions regarding the Pennsauken School District, which in turn, helps our schools to run smoothly and our students to be successful.

Longfellow Poets Winners In Library Contest

LongfellowOn June 3, several students from Longfellow Elementary School were awarded for their outstanding poetry! Chloe Burgos from Ms. Grant’s kindergarten class; Angelina Thach and Angel Vazquez from Mrs. Shaner’s second grade class; and Andre Pratt from Mrs. Padalino’s fourth grade class were all in attendance at the Pennsauken Free Public Library during the annual poetry contest to share their award-winning poetry!

All of the children did an amazing job and their poetry is currently on display at the Library. The teachers at Longfellow would like to extend their gratitude and thank the Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library for providing the student with such a wonderful opportunity.

Congratulations to the winners!

Students Have One Honey Of A Project At Phifer Science Fair

PhiferScienceFairStudents Genesis Fernandez and Julia Ortiz won first place at Phifer Middle School’s annual science fair. Their project explored whether or not the consumption of honey helped alleviate allergy symptoms. The two intrepid researchers are seen here with Angel Cook, district science supervisor and Thomas Honeyman, the principal Howard M. Phifer Middle School, who certainly appreciated the focus of the project!

Well Into Their Nineties, Pennsauken Residents Going Strong

Frank_ProfilesmallBy Frank Sinatra, AAP Editor

In the last few months, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of speaking with some very, very longtime residents: 99-year-old Pete Heckers, and 96-year-old Eleanor Seaver. The lives they’ve lived and the stories they tell give us a unique snapshot of Pennsauken’s past.

Local Student Named To Honor Roll

People_ResidentMakesHonorRoTalley Morton, daughter of Janice Talley of Pennsauken, has been named to the honor roll at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C., where she is a rising senior. Miss Morton was also inducted into the Saint Mary’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, which honors “those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.”

To be eligible for the honor roll, a student must maintain a weighed grade point average of 3.5 of higher in at least five academic courses, while maintaining the status of a student in good standing with the Judicial Board and administration.

Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, N.C., is an independent, Episcopal, college-preparatory, boarding and day school dedicated to academic excellence and personal achievement for girls in grades 9-12. Founded in 1842, Saint Mary’s is the fourth-oldest all-girls boarding/day school in the nation.

Knowing Why There’s No Sun In The Sky…

WagsphotoBy Bob Wagner, AAP Columnist

The constant march of thunderstorm clouds crossing the Delaware River, lightning flashing, thunder rolling, etc., is interesting, for a week. This weather pattern usually coincides with June graduations. Every year, for as long as I can remember, seats were set up inside school, and out. It was weather roulette for families of more than two, since the whole family can watch outdoors, but only two can sit inside.

This year, I have only had to water my impatiens twice. We traveled to New Mexico for eight days, and I knew when we arrived home in the middle of the night, I’d find shriveled flowers out front. Au contraire, mon frère! All the blooms are thick and happy. Rain, rain, go away, come again, preferably in California.

“Mrs. Wordsmith” And The Joy Of Shining In Our Own Way

JudithphotoBy Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist

Deadline? Column? I didn’t have one single thought in my head as to what to write for my August AAP article. And then, waiting for me in my computer, was a letter from an old Scrabble playing friend of mine.

Her e-mail was addressed to: “Mrs. Wordsmith.”
