A New Year With New Activities From The Friends Of The Library

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

Happy New Year! Whew! Isn’t it nice that things have settled down somewhat now that most of the holidays have passed for another year? And to make things even better, the Friends of the Pennsauken Library have a few things in store that you’ll not only enjoy, but will help you start your 2018 relaxed and hassle-free after last month’s hustle and bustle.

On Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2:00 p.m., we are proud to present an informative and totally interesting “talk,” especially in these times of 24/7 news bombardment on anything and everything that happens in our world today.

Meet Ed Eisen, a spry and engaging octogenarian; former journalist; Camden High School attendee; reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the now dissolved, yet still beloved, Philadelphia Bulletin; and a genuine pro at reinventing himself over the years. Ed’s talk will contrast journalism then and now and give us some inside info on all the unusual and exciting events he’s covered in his 52 years in journalism, including broadcasting with such notaries as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Senator Edward Kennedy, Jackie Gleason, former World Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier, and many, many more. Mr. Eisen was even the one-time PR person for the Vatican, got to meet a future pope, and had lunch with Mother Teresa, an experience he says that changed his life.

Ed’s promo on YouTube, “Ed Eisen Presents: A Reporter’s Front Row Seat to History,” gives some of the highlights he’ll be talking about on Jan. 7, so please check it out.

This event is free and open to all area residents. However, we do recommend you register by calling the Library at (856) 665-5959, ext. 3 to sign up.

After you do that, all you have to do is mark your calendar. You won’t want to miss this!

Here’s something else we don’t want you to miss. Please note that we’ve made a permanent change to our “Munch and a Movie” get togethers. From now on, they’ll take place on the third Tuesday of the month instead of the second. That places January’s session on the 16th from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room. Plan to be there to see what cinematic delight we have in store for you. All you have to do is pack your lunch, sit back and relax. We’ll supply the snacks and beverages… and of course the movie! Share in the fun and bring a friend if you like.

Finally, for those of you taking advantage of all those great sales and January bargains online, please remember The Friends of the Pennsauken Library. If you’re not already signed up, click on https://smile.amazon.com/ch/22-3398279 and Amazon will donate 0.05 percent of your purchases to the Friends at absolutely NO cost to you. Win-win, huh?

We have all sorts of plans in the works for the upcoming months: new yoga, craft sessions, a concert, driver safety classes, and more informative speakers, just to name a few.

And, in true January tradition, we hope that one of your new resolutions for 2018 is to join the Friends and help us with events and ideas to make the Library even bigger, better, and brighter!

We’ll meet in the Community Room the second Wednesday of the month, Jan. 10, at 7:00 p.m. See you then!
