Celebrating 68 Fabulously Groovy Years

JudithphotoBy Judith Kristen, AAP Columnist

By the time you have this month’s AAP in your hands, I’ll be just two days short of my 68th birthday.

Now most of us, after say age 40, don’t do much about birthdays for another decade, until it’s another one of those “landmark” ones that Hallmark has cards for, you know… 50, 55, 60, 65…

Personally, I think every day is a landmark day, as is every additional year, and it requires celebration even if you’re the only one celebrating it.

MPWC Guest Speakers At PMAC Luncheon On April 13

PMAC_LogoMike Saraceni and Sean Fitzgerald of the Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission (MPWC) will be the guest speakers at the upcoming networking luncheon sponsored by the Pennsauken-Merchantville Area Chamber of Commerce (P.M.A.C.) on Wednesday, April 13 at the Pennsauken Country Club, 3800 Haddonfield Rd.

Saraceni, who serves the MPWC as chief operating officer, and Fitzgerald, a water quality technician for the water utility, will highlight the organization’s efforts to maintain quality of life of local residents and businesses while protecting water as a valuable resource. In light of the water crisis in Flint, Mich., Saraceni and Fitzgerald intend to answer questions about water quality.

Friends Of The Library Art Show Runs April 17-24

By Arlene Miller, Friends of the Pennsauken Free Public Library

Even if April showers dampen your outside plans, all the activities lined up by the Friends of the Pennsauken Library will add lots of sunshine to your days. The Friends’ annual Art Show runs April 17-24. There’s still time to create something wonderful to register and display; you’ll find all the details in the Art Show brochure currently available at the Library’s lobby desk. During the Art Show, the Friends’ are sponsoring a variety of activities all week long. As space is limited, you’ll need to sign up at the Library’s circulation desk in advance; and except for that Monday’s children’s workshop, all children be at least 10 years of age or older and accompanied by a responsible adult for the entire session.

Bringing The Vision For Pennsauken Into Focus

John-KneibBy John Kneib, Mayor of Pennsauken Township

Last month, the members of Pennsauken Township Committee held a special public meeting to discuss the vision for our town. The meeting was well-attended by our community, who actively participated in a brainstorming session that generated some basic ideas on what makes Pennsauken stand out from our other neighbors. We also discussed issues that our Township is facing, like how we’re dealing with abandoned properties, which is our number one priority as a Committee. And for as many good things we can identify about our town, there definitely are some things about Pennsauken that we have to work on. But for the most part, the conversation was extremely positive. For those who’d like to read a more detailed account of the special public meeting, you can click here.

Trying to clearly define a vision for Pennsauken doesn’t just stop with one meeting, although it would be great if things were that simple. This was just an introductory step in a much larger process, one that requires input and feedback from our residents and business owners. You are the people that live and raise families here; those who work hard to make ends meet; members of our churches and service organizations. Only by taking the pulse of our community, can we really identify Pennsauken’s direction.

Griffith Morgan House Celebrates First Sundays, Colonial Earth Day

Historic Griffith Morgan House, located at 243 Griffith Morgan Ln., is holding special open house events on the first Sunday of April and May.

Historic Griffith Morgan House, located at 243 Griffith Morgan Ln., is holding special open house events on the first Sunday of April and May.

The spring season had special resonance for our colonial and early American ancestors in the days before we could seek out the sun’s warmth by hopping a flight to Florida. Many early signs marked the slow return of the sun to our climes: the lengthening days, the sprouts emerging from frozen soil, and also the bounteous return of the anadromous shad to spawn in the Delaware River. The fishermen of Pea Shore were always eager and ready for this most satisfying rite of spring! In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Mohican Club, located near Griffith Morgan House, hosted abundant planked shad roasts for the delight of its membership. On Sunday, April 3, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the historic hearth of Griffith Morgan House will glow with a demonstration of the delectable seasonal fish roasting at the open fire during its next “First Sunday” event! Learn of the economic, recreational, and environmental importance of this fishery, its decline, and the slow rebound of a remarkable marine resource.
