Food Adventures: Rita Marie’s Eatery And Pizzeria

rachealprofileBy Rachael Rivera, AAP Columnist

This month’s adventuring led me to Rita Marie’s Eatery and Pizzeria at 134 East Park Ave. in Merchantville. This corner foodie hotspot is clean and the staff there is fantastic. I walked in on the day I was to interview them; there were customers at their tables eating and watching the big flat screen in their dining area, some were in line paying for their food, while others perused the menu and boards for their next tasty selection.

Food Adventures: Men In The Kitchen Kicked-Up Sandwiches And Barbecue

By Rachael Rivera, AAP Columnist

My family constantly battles over who does the best ribs; and my brother swears by his steak grilling technique over anyone else’s. Regardless of whom does it best, the important thing is that we have a passion for our barbecue. The newly-opened Pennsauken-based eating establishment I visited for this month’s column seems to have come from the same group of food-loving, kitchen-savvy, family-loving folks.

A few years back, All Around Pennsauken highlighted Mary’s Mobile Meals, a small food truck located along River Rd. Shortly thereafter, the truck, run by longtime Pennsauken resident Mary Hilbert, hit the road and moved to the Spring Garden section of Philadelphia for several years, then spent some time in Cherry Hill. Now, Hilbert has upgraded to a larger food truck, went gourmet, changed the name of the business to Mary’s Mobile Diner, and came back to town, this time for good.

Soul Food Abounds At Ms. Nancy’s Place

Special Submission By Joe Cooney, JoeCooneyBiz.com

Nancy Miller, a Philly native who moved to Pennsauken 11 years ago, recently opened Ms. Nancy’s Place Soulfood Restaurant at 177 South Centre St. in Merchantville.

The spot, right on the circle off Chapel Ave., used to house a fried chicken joint, then a cheesesteak and Philly pretzel franchise, then a deli and hoagie shop.

“I’m bringing something different than the others did,” Ms. Nancy says. “There are plenty of pizza and hoagie shops around. I’ve been in the catering business for 17 years, and people were always asking me when I was going to open a restaurant.

“I finally took a leap of faith and put it in God’s hands.”

Bobby Ray Harris grew up in Pennsauken, first at the corner of Washington and Browning and then on Harvey Ave. off of Cove. Life took him across the country and the globe. He became a football coach at Florida State and worked for Dick Vermeil when the Eagles’ legend was head coach of the Saint Louis Rams. Harris also worked for the NFL front office and then ran global operations for a small Manhattan business, visiting five different countries a month for several years. But five years ago, he came home. Harris is the owner of Bobby Ray’s Pennsauken Tavern, a “home town bar” located along Westfield Ave.

Yes, this month, on November 16, 2014, that famous landmark at Rt. 130 and Westfield Ave. celebrates its golden anniversary!
