But an invitation to attend a party hosted by American Legion Post 68 from Jeff Brown, a local veteran and owner of Stephenson Brown Funeral Home, and some gentle prodding from his wife, changed his life for the better.

2014 has been a year of historic anniversaries, of local and global significance. This year, New Jersey attained the ripe age of 350. Pennsauken’s own “Jersey Joe” Walcott was born 100 years ago. The 50th anniversary of the Pennsauken wedding of Chubby Checker and Dutch beauty Catherina Lodders occurred earlier this year. And it was also a century ago that the world was plunged into the cataclysm of the Great War, which altered human affairs in so many ways.

Thanking Veterans For Their Service Every Day

Every so often, something printed on a card or bumper sticker catches my eye and makes me smile. And ever so rarely, a saying makes me think. That happens less and less lately, as my arteries harden, and real thinking occurs only on really good days. My usual November thoughts live and die around pies of pumpkin, and turkeys roasted. But this little bumper sticker on the car in front of me the other day reminded me that Veterans Day also occurs in the month of the turkey.
